Project Concern International is a global development organisation working to enhance health, end hunger and help vulnerable people overcome hardship—resulting in healthier families and communities now and in the future. The organisation works in 16 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas and is impacting the lives of nearly 12 million people globally.
PCI is currently working in Botswana to combat HIV as the country has the third highest HIV prevalence in the world with 21.9% of the population infected. To address this issue, PCI was awarded a five-year grant in 2016 to implement the Comprehensive Care & Support for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).
This programme is aimed at strengthening community agencies to seek, support and provide HIV/AIDS related services to OVC and their parents/caregivers. It is supported by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
To further address the diverse needs of adolescents in this programme, PCI created financial literacy modules adapted from the Aflateen curriculum. Aflateen is a socio-economic programme that empowers youth aged 14-18 to become productive members of the community by teaching them financial literacy, entrepreneurship and social development skills.
The modules adapted by PCI, called “Life-Skills+,” include lessons on: comprehensive sexuality education, GBV, HIV prevention, financial literacy and social asset building. The programmes’ aim is to comprehensively address all aspects of an adolescent’s life in a holistic manner.
In conjunction with this programme, children are able to further develop their financial and life skills through existing Aflateen clubs. Parnters of PCI have reached more than 400 children in the last quarter through Aflateen clubs in Botswana.
