Partner of the Week: YPSK, ChildFund Indonesia

Since its establishment in August 1966, Yayasan Pembinaan Sosial Katolik (YPSK: The Catholic Social Development Foundation) Lampung has been dedicated to enhancing community capacity and resources, improving service quality, building meaningful partnerships, and fostering a more dignified community life.

As a local partner of ChildFund International in Indonesia, YPSK is committed to supporting children and youth through initiatives that promote optimal growth, responsive parenting, and empowerment through education and advocacy.

Our Partnership

YPSK has been a partner of Aflatoun since 2016, integrating social and financial education into its life skills programs for children aged 8-14. The partnership was initiated through ChildFund International, which introduced the Aflatoun curriculum into Indonesia’s life skills education framework.

The Aflatoun programme has proven to be an invaluable resource in helping children develop positive character traits and essential money management skills. Social and financial education equips children with the ability to navigate modern challenges by fostering empathy, cooperation, and responsibility while instilling financial literacy skills such as saving, budgeting, and making informed financial decisions. This holistic approach empowers children to become self-reliant and responsible individuals in their communities.

Key Initiatives by YPSK:

YPSK has undertaken several impactful initiatives to integrate social and financial education into children’s lives, including:

  • Integrating Social and Financial Education: Incorporating the Aflatoun curriculum into extracurricular activities in secondary schools to ensure students receive practical and engaging lessons on financial literacy and social responsibility.
  • Collaboration with Financial Institutions: Partnering with local banks and cooperatives to facilitate children’s savings and promote responsible financial habits from an early age.
  • Environmental and Social Initiatives: Promoting zero-waste campaigns and climate change awareness through activities such as tree planting, cleaning places of worship, and waste sorting.
  • Market Day Events: Implementing financial activities that provide children with hands-on experience in budgeting, sales, and entrepreneurship through school market days.
  • Child-Led Advocacy: Encouraging children to become pioneers and advocates for social change through child protection campaigns, fostering leadership and proactive community involvement.

Championing Financial Literacy

A shining example of YPSK’s successful implementation of the Social and Financial Education program can be found at State Elementary School 2 Panggungrejo in Gadingrejo District, Pringsewu Regency. Here, the Life Skills Education and Financial Literacy classes have become a favorite among students, offering them the opportunity to explore their unique strengths and develop teamwork and collaboration skills through interactive games and activities.

Students at the school have taken their learning beyond the classroom by engaging in entrepreneurial activities such as gardening and food production. With the support of their teachers and community, they have transformed their school garden into a thriving space for growing vegetables like water spinach and green onions. From preparing the soil to harvesting and selling their produce, students gain firsthand experience in business planning and financial management.

During the dry season, the profits from their garden sales are reinvested into small food businesses, with students preparing and selling snacks at the school’s market day events. These events, attended by teachers, parents, and community members, provide an excellent platform for students to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and take pride in their achievements. The proceeds from these initiatives are carefully managed by the students, fostering a culture of financial independence and responsibility.

YPSK’s dedication to social and financial education continues to create meaningful opportunities for children and youth in Indonesia. By equipping them with essential life skills and empowering them to take initiative, YPSK is helping to build a generation of responsible and self-sufficient individuals ready to shape a better future.
