Children champion peace in Aden, Yemen

Through peer-led education and community outreach, children in Aden are sharing messages of peace, cooperation and responsibility, demonstrating how young people can help shape stronger, more connected communities.

What happens when children are given the confidence, knowledge and opportunity to become advocates for positive change in their communities?

In Aden, Yemen, children are putting these opportunities into practice.

Through an initiative implemented by the Yemen Peace School Organization (YPS), children have been taking the lead in promoting peaceful coexistence, cooperation and social responsibility among their peers and wider communities.

The activities form part of the Peer-to-Peer Social and Financial Education for Peacebuilding project, funded by the Vitol Foundation and managed by Aflatoun International.

Young voices, meaningful messages

At the heart of the initiative is a simple idea: children can learn from one another and help bring positive messages into the communities where they live.

Through peer-led awareness sessions, participating children explored and shared essential skills that support their personal development and relationships with others.

These included effective communication, self-confidence, self-esteem, goal-setting, planning, financial management, responsibility, time management and teamwork.

Each of these skills contributes to how children understand themselves, interact with others and make decisions.

For example, learning effective communication can help children express their opinions respectfully and listen to different perspectives. Teamwork encourages cooperation, while planning and financial management help them develop responsibility and make informed choices.

Together, these skills provide an important foundation for peaceful relationships and active participation in community life.

Taking learning into communities

The children also carried their messages beyond the awareness sessions.

They reached out to peers and community members in schools, neighbourhoods and public parks across Aden, creating opportunities to discuss peace, mutual respect and cooperation.

By engaging with people in familiar community spaces, the young participants helped bring conversations about peaceful coexistence into everyday life.

The approach encourages children to see themselves as active contributors to their communities, capable of sharing knowledge and encouraging positive behaviour among their peers.

It also demonstrates the value of peer education, where children take an active role in communicating ideas and supporting one another’s learning.

Building skills for peaceful communities

For children growing up in communities affected by social and economic challenges, opportunities to develop confidence, cooperation and practical life skills are particularly valuable.

Aflatoun International’s approach to social and financial education recognises the connection between personal development, responsible decision-making and community well-being.

The Peer-to-Peer Social and Financial Education for Peacebuilding project brings these elements together by supporting children to strengthen their skills and share what they learn with others.

Through its partnership with Yemen Peace School Organization, Aflatoun is helping create opportunities for children to participate in conversations that matter to their communities.

The initiative also highlights the importance of trusting children with meaningful responsibilities and recognising their ability to contribute ideas and solutions.

Giving children a voice in peacebuilding

The activities in Aden offer an encouraging example of children taking an active role in promoting understanding and cooperation.

Their involvement shows how education can create opportunities for young people to practise leadership, communicate confidently and encourage others to participate positively in society.

When children are given the skills and space to express themselves, their ideas can reach far beyond the classroom.

Aflatoun International appreciates the commitment of Yemen Peace School Organization in implementing these activities and the Vitol Foundation for supporting the project.

As the children of Aden continue sharing messages of peace and responsibility, their efforts offer a valuable reminder: meaningful community change can begin with young people who are encouraged to learn, speak up and take part.
