The ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024, a landmark event in the cooperative movement, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 25, 2024, at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Organized by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and hosted by the Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO), the event coincides with the launch of the UN International Year of Cooperatives 2025.
Addressing delegates from over 100 countries, PM Modi highlighted the transformative role of cooperatives in India’s socioeconomic fabric. He remarked, “For the world, cooperative is a model, but for India, it is the foundation of culture and a lifestyle. Through this conference, we will gain insights into India’s future cooperative journey, and the global cooperative movement will acquire tools and inspiration for the 21st century.”
Roeland Monasch, CEO of Aflatoun International, also participated, emphasizing the role of education and youth empowerment in driving cooperative prosperity globally. During the panel he participated in Roeland Monasch said: “The future of cooperatives truly depends on the engagement and leadership of young people. They’re not just future members—they’re the ones who will ensure cooperatives remain relevant and sustainable in an ever-changing world. The values of the cooperative movement and Aflatoun very much align. Aflatoun works with the cooperative movement in a growing number of countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas to empower the youth with essential social, financial and entrepreneurship education.”
The conference, themed “Cooperatives Build Prosperity for All,” includes discussions on enabling policies, leadership, and sustainability. It underscores India’s growing leadership in the cooperative sector, with innovative approaches like carbon-neutral initiatives and enhanced gender representation.
The event, which runs until November 30, is expected to shape global and local cooperative strategies, reflecting India’s slogan of “Sahkar se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperation).
