Partner of the Week: Action for Child Development Trust

The Action for Child Development Trust (ACDT) has worked in Western Kenya since 2007, towards bringing improved quality of life to children and their communities. They seek to be a leading organisation that is dependable and trusted to facilitate child and youth development in Kenya and beyond. They aim to enhance the quality of life for children and young people by providing education in, health care, entrepreneurship, environmental conservation, and ICT skill development initiatives.

ACDT’s commitment to self-sustainability is made achievable by working in close support of key groups within the region including country government, the private sector, educational institutions, and civil society organisations. Aflatoun International and Action for Child Development Trust have been working together since 2013, by implementing the Aflatoun and Aflateen methodology.

The Aflateen programme targets young people between 15 and 18 years old. The organisation uses an interactive and ICT based platform to increase the youngsters’ knowledge and skills in information and communications technologies. Through social media and a website, they can communicate and share ideas with other young people all over the world. In this process, ACDT works with other stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, schools and non-formal centres, parents and the community, as well as financial institutions.

Additionally, youngsters are supported in becoming agents of change in their social-cultural environmental and economic worlds- adopting the ‘People, Planet and Profit’ model.

ACDT facilitates children and youth mentors in social and financial education through a number of initiatives such as: Aflatoun clubs inside and outside of schools, youth groups initiating civic activities in their communities and organizing an expo to showcase what they have developed as social and financial entrepreneurs.

Overall, the programmes aim is to equip children and youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become economically self-reliant citizens whose sense of social and financial responsibility propels them to create a more equitable global society.
