The Amal Khair Yasmin Foundation, located in Jakarta, Indonesia was founded in 1998 by Haidar Bagir. It is a non-profit organisation that concentrates on quality free education programmes for poor families. They facilitate a range of empowerment programmes including learning studies, teacher training programs, assistance programmes with schools (madarasas), autism therapy centers, health advocacy and an orphanage. Their core values comprises of quality orientation, sustainable business process, creativity and innovation, religion and spirit. The foundation has been implementing the Aflatot, Aflatoun and Aflateen programmes into their curriculums.

The Aflatoun implementation was initiated by the Amal Khair Yasmin Foundation in 2012, and currently spans 8 provinces; South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Java, Central Java, West Java, North Sumatra, East Borneo, South Borneo, and Jakarta. Now, there are more than 700 students and 125 teachers from 31 schools in Indonesia who participate in the Aflatoun modules.

One of the schools that implemented the Aflateen programme is Hasan Mustapa Agribusinesses Vocational High School in Bogor, which focuses on entrepreneur development in the area of agriculture. The students are actively engaged in all agricultural management processes. They manage the farm, tilling the fields to planting the crops, which include, pakchoy, sweet corn, red spinach, green spinach, cayenne, strawberry, kale, cassava, caisim, basil, celery, onion leaf, sweet potato, carrot, chayote, and butternut.

They are also involved in harvesting, packaging and distributing the vegetables online via social media, and at the bazaar or local market. They help design the packaging materials and repurpose some of the vegetables to make chips or dumplings to sell. For developing their business, the students used the Haspa’s Aflateen Co-op model, which represents a typical economic organisation based on familiarity and cooperativeness.

Muhammad Amiin, a participant of the Aflateen programme and chairman of the Aflateen Haspa coorperative speaks to its impact, “I’ve gained much inspiration from the aflateen programme. Aflatoun made us become smart in financial literacy, knowledge on starting a business and also made us more confident.”
