Partner of the Week: Children International Colombia

Children International is a global non-profit humanitarian organisation helping children who live in poverty. Their vision is to break the cycle of poverty by providing children with health, education, empowerment, and employment. Children International Colombia is part of this global humanitarian organisation and has been working together with Aflatoun International since December 2010.

During 2018, Children International Colombia implemented the Aflatoun and Aflateen programmes in 10 community centres in the cities of Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Cartagena. The implementation of the programme reached 389 Aflatoun and Aflateen clubs. These clubs transmitted the Aflatoun methodology to 6,076 children and young people.

The Aflatoun and Aflateen clubs started 293 financial ventures, aimed not only at the collection of resources, but also at developing creative skills through handicrafts and crafts that are exhibited and sold at the Aflatoun Annual Fair. Moreover, other projects are focused on environmental care through recycling.

Young people of the Aflateen Clubs are called “Aflateen Entrepreneurs”, creating innovative entrepreneurial ideas. The result of the financial entrepreneurship, 251 community-oriented social enterprises were carried out, in the areas of environmental care, food and clothing, and recreation for children and seniors.

The Aflatoun programme generates a great impact on the Colombian population where each year new participants enrol in the programme, as well as new volunteer facilitators who are ready to deliver financial and social education, making children leaders in their communities. The Aflatoun methodology develops children’s and young people’s self-knowledge, empathy, interpersonal relationships, problem and conflict management, decision-making, critical thinking and creative thinking. The learning of these skills empowers the children in becoming agents of change in their communities.
