Partner of the Week: Association “Gender, Peace and Security”, Albania

The association “Gender, Peace and Security” (AGPS) was founded in 2000 in Albania to protect, lobby, and advocate for women and girls’ fundamental rights, elevate women’s position in the political and public landscape, and support peace and security through women’s and girls’ empowerment.

AGPS works to shift patriarchal mindsets by increasing male engagement in awareness sessions on issues like domestic violence in both rural and urban areas in the country. Aiming to elevate the societal role of women, AGPS promotes their voice and decision-making power within families. AGPS also enhances access to support services for women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable groups, and has provided direct services for over 20 years. To support economic empowerment, AGPS aids the reintegration of domestic violence survivors and assists youth through startup projects.

In peace and security, AGPS has been instrumental in forming the “women, peace and security” Coalition, contributing to developing and monitoring National Action Plans for implementing Resolution 1325 in Albania. AGPS also produces research reports and action plans to support the socioeconomic reintegration of violence survivors, with elements incorporated into Durres Municipality’s Local Action Plan for Gender Equality.

AGPS advocates for improved services for victims of gender-based and domestic violence and has driven amendments to the law addressing family violence. It has also promoted the establishment of a National Registry for Secual Crime Victims and is actively working to ensure the implementation of the law on social care services, including the setup of Needs Assessment and referral units in Durres.

Our Partnership

The Association “Gender, Peace and Security” has decided to join the Aflatoun network in 2024 and wants to integrate the curricula and modules on Social and Financial Education into its activities. In particular, they chose to partner up because of Aflatoun’s long experience in different countries worldwide, which offers AGPS a great opportunity to learn from the best practices implemented by the rest of the network.

Moreover, AGPS strongly believes in the importance of Social and Financial Education as they have a long experience in projects focused in the economic empowerment of women and girls, also to the youths, contributing in raising their capacities toward self/employment opportunities and supporting through start-ups. In an insecure social-economic environment, AGPS thinks that everything that might increase the capacities of youths and vulnerable groups is essential.
