The Ministry of Secondary Education in Cameroon signed an agreement with Aflatoun International in 2015 to work towards integrating social and financial education in the national secondary education system. Last year, the ministry published a decree to establish Aflatoun Clubs in all secondary schools in the country!
In 2011, Aflatoun International partner SNAES (The National Autonomous Union of Secondary School Teachers) launched a pilot of the Aflatoun programme in Cameroon with the support of Peace Corps volunteers from the Northern province of Lagdo. Local education authorities representing the Ministry of Secondary Education supported the launch and participated in the first Training of Trainers in the country, which trained facilitators on implementing the Aflatoun programme using active learning methodologies.
The education authorities also attended national, regional and international Aflatoun events and were continuously informed of the progress of the pilot. Throughout this process, the Ministry of Secondary Education showed great interest in the programme as it could potentially support its objective to improve entrepreneurship education in the country.
With the mediation and support of SNAES, Aflatoun International and the Ministry of Secondary Education signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the 17th of September 2015. The objectives set out in this partnership are the integration of Social and Financial Education in the formal secondary education system, the increase of support for teacher training and the implementation of social and financial education in school activities and workshops.
