For 15 years, the Network for Education Children and Youth (NECY) has been promoting the involvement of civil society organisations in Sri Lanka, working at both community and national levels to advance children’s rights, promote quality education, and ensure equal opportunities for all.
The organisation addresses critical gaps in social and financial literacy while raising awareness about rights and responsibilities among young people.
NECY implements various initiatives to fulfill its mission, including:
- Youth camps and awareness campaigns
- Establishing school clubs
- Training teachers in social and financial education
- Empowering preschool teachers regarding professional rights
- Joining exchange experiences locally and internationally (such as the Exchange Experience organised in Italy by Students Lab Italia)
- Conducting capacity-building programmes for civil society groups, government institutions, and educational networks
These efforts have reached significant achievements, such as introducing saving habits among students and establishing democratically-run student clubs where children practice civic participation.
Our Partnership
Since 2013, NECY has partnered with Aflatoun to implement social and financial educational programmes. NECY implements the AflaTot, AflaToun, and AflaTeen curricula.
NECY was particularly drawn to Aflatoun’s teacher training resources and active learning methodology. This approach effectively engages learners of all ages while remaining adaptable to Sri Lankan cultural contexts.
Through the Aflatoun’s programmes, NECY addresses crucial societal issues including girls’ empowerment, peace-building, and the rights of disabled learners.
Despite Sri Lanka having an educated population, social and financial education was previously unfamiliar to many citizens, and unemployment remains a significant challenge. NECY believes that training teachers and community leaders in SFE empowers children, youth, and adults, ultimately strengthening the nation by inspiring young entrepreneurs.
Voices From our learners, teachers and parents
During Global Money Week 2025, students, teachers and parents came together to share with us the impact that Social and Financial Education has had on them; and to tell about some of the activities that they implement to put into practice what they have learnt.
Join us in learning more about baking classes, school fairs and markets after which the money earned by the students from the sales goes back into their schools or communities, to help the children and families who come from lower-income backgrounds.
