Partner of the Week: Plan International, Jordan

Founded in 1937, Plan International is a development and humanitarian organisation. The organisation is committed to empowering children, youth, and communities to tackle the root causes of discrimination, exclusion, and vulnerability, particularly against girls. Operating in over 80 countries, Plan International strives to create a world where equality is within reach for all. Their mission is centered on driving change in practices and policies at local, national, and global levels. With a deep understanding of the challenges faced by children worldwide, the organization uses its expertise to lead transformative efforts that bring about positive, lasting change.

They work closely with children and communities to help them prepare for, respond to, and overcome crises. Supporting children’s safe growth from birth to adulthood is a fundamental pillar of Plan International’s approach, with a strong emphasis on rights, gender equality, and context-specific needs. The organization holds itself accountable to the children and communities it serves, ensuring that its initiatives are aligned with the needs of those on the ground.

In Jordan, Plan International is currently leading more than 10 projects. These range from initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and enhance youth skills to efforts aimed at combating child labor and increasing girls’ participation. Each project is designed to address critical local challenges while promoting broader global goals of equality and sustainability.

Our Partnership

Partnerships play a vital role in Plan International’s mission. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the organization has established partnerships across sectors, including Aflatoun International. Our collaboration focuses on equipping young people with critical life skills, particularly in managing money, entrepreneurship, and understanding their rights and responsibilities in a playful manner.

Social and financial literacy are pivotal to fostering better communities. Social literacy enhances cohesion by promoting shared values and mutual respect, creating a more united society. Furthermore, financial literacy, particularly when combined with social literacy, empowers individuals—especially women—by offering them equal opportunities for economic and social advancement. In this way, Plan International contributes to sustainable development and long-term empowerment.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) program, First Steps, Big Step (FSBS) success story:

Ismail was born with a speech impediment and physical disabilities due to a lack of oxygen at birth. Determined to give him the best start in life, his family, especially his father, enrolled him in Plan International Jordan’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme, First Steps, Big Step (FSBS).

Each week, Ismail’s mother ensured he was prepared for the sessions, helping him engage with the learning materials and activities. The programme allowed Ismail to grow in confidence and strengthened his bond with his father, who even built a small garden where they could spend quality time together.

Through the program, Ismail was able to develop a stronger relationship with his family, particularly his father. Their bond deepened as they worked together through the ECD activities. Ismail’s father, understanding the importance of quality time, even built a small garden outside their home, where he and Ismail could spend valuable time together. Reflecting on their journey, Ismail’s father shared, “My son is similar to a sponge, and that’s why it’s important for me to keep him near, so I ensure he is soaking up the best and most valuable information. I want him to grow in an environment full of nurture and love“.

The programme also connected Ismail’s father with other parents facing similar challenges, providing a support network that encouraged his growth as a father. Confident in Ismail’s potential, his father is determined to help him overcome any obstacles and thrive. This supportive community, alongside the knowledge gained through the ECD program, empowered Ismail and his father. Father now looks forward to watching his son continue to grow, knowing that no challenge can stop Ismail from achieving his potential.
